The Frizz (1994)
Artist: Jamie Brooks

Originally created by Trevor Sorbie

Introduced in 1994, The Frizz became one of Trevor Sorbie’s most distinctive and innovative techniques.

Rather than inventing an entirely new method, Trevor challenged conventional thinking by taking an existing technique and reversing it. By creating texture at the roots rather than the ends, he achieved a completely different shape and effect, demonstrating his belief that creativity often comes from seeing familiar ideas in a new way.

The resulting look combined smooth, polished surfaces with dramatic textured forms, creating a striking contrast between control and movement. It became one of Trevor’s signature creations and introduced a technique that continues to influence hairdressers today. Decades later, variations of frizzing are still used to create texture, shape and movement across countless styles, demonstrating the lasting impact of Trevor’s original idea.

Recreated by

Jamie Brooks

Jamie Brooks chose The Frizz because of his personal connection to both the technique and the era in which it was created.

Having worked alongside Trevor throughout the 1990s, Jamie regularly recreated and demonstrated the technique as part of Trevor’s shows and presentations. More than thirty years later, he continues to admire the simplicity of the original idea and the extraordinary influence it has had on modern hairdressing.

The Recreation

Jamie has recreated the classic Frizz, celebrating both the original look and the technique that sits behind it. More than thirty years after its introduction, the technique continues to be used by hairdressers around the world to create texture, shape and movement, proving the enduring influence of Trevor’s innovation.
